What is SSL?
We´re sure you´ve noticed that some URLs start with http:// and others start with https:// and maybe you´ve also noticed that the extra "s"; was there when you were browsing on a website that requires you to provide sensitive information, like when your customers are paying for their parking online. The extra "s"; means that the connection to your parking website is encrypted. The technology behind that extra "s"; is called SSL, which stands for Secure Sockets Layer and this layer ensures that all data passed between the web server and browser remain private.
Why does your parking need it?
For protection, obviously, but let´s be a little more specific: let´s say that one of your customers comes onto your website to book their parking. They fill in the booking dates, vehicle- and credit card information, the usual. But you don´t have a Parking Software website with Secure SSL Encryption, so when a hacker wants to attack your website it can happen in a number of ways, but one of the most common attacks is this: a hacker places a small, undetected listening program on your server. The listening program then waits in the background until a visitor starts typing information on the website. It will then take all that sensitive information and send it back to the hacker. Ouch!
How does it work?
When your customers visit your Parking Software Website with Secure SSL Encryption, the browser will form a connection with your webserver, look at the SSL certificate, and then bind together your browser and the server. This binding connection happens instantly and is so secure so that no one besides you and your customers and the website can see the information to can see or access what is typed into your website.
